Diet Variety
While most people think of cats as extremely picky eaters, they really need quite a varied diet. Variety is not only the 'spice of life' - for cats, it is also essential to health. Cats are carnivores, and require many different kinds of meat to provide the proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that they require. No one type of meat has everything.
A wide range of commercially sold, well-balanced foods should be offered early in a cat's life. Cats who are fed exclusively one food may be reluctant to try new foods. To encourage your cat to try something new, mix a new food with a familiar food. This not only provides the nutrition that your cat requires, but also adds interesting experiences to her existence.
Dry cat food is good for your cat's teeth and digestion. Canned food offers a taste and consistency that many cats prefer, but if you feed your cat a diet consisting exclusively of canned foods, she may develop tartar build up on her teeth, and may have loose stools.
Occasionally serve commercial brands of cat treats or specially formulated snacks, mainly to add variety, never as a steady diet.
