Which is best and why!

Human relationships with dogs have currently been traced back to 100,000 years BC. During this time humankind and dogs were pack dwellers with similar instincts. Den Security, Food and Pack Survival were of paramount importance for continued survival. Since then humankind has made enormous leaps forward in our evolution and have greatly changed the appearance of the modern dog and breed many for specific traits and characteristics.  We have so woven the dog into our lives that we see them as human and put upon them our human values and perceptions unfortunately to the detriment of the dog.

We fail to see the dog is largely unchanged in it's needs or view of it's world since we first came together as human and wolf.  I stress it's world because our dogs do not live in our perceived human world there perception is totally different. Most of us are entertained watching our dogs run to the property line barking at an interloper or barking at another dog approaching on a walk or going to the door when it hears something outside.

To your dog though this is all very serious, your dog is still ruled by his or her instincts from 100,000 years ago. Another animal approaching your dogs marked territory, Den or physically approaching your dog are all challenges and potential threats to security and survival.  We can take the dog from the wolf pack and change there looks and skills but we cannot take from the dog what nature gives them before birth as basic survival instructions. Den Security (the fending off of animals approaching there territory, your house), The concept that the Pack must survive therefore ensures there survival and Food (hunting) are the 3 elements that rule your dogs behavior.  As an example when you go out and return home your dog meets you at the door, we as humans believe this is because our dog loves us. Granted our dogs do bond with us but that is not the reason for the greeting. When you leave your dog perceives this as you going on a hunt. After each hunt not all pack members may return so the need to reform the pack and pecking order exists. This is exactly what is happening when you walk in the door. Now you can see how we view the world completely differently that our dogs do. We are in the same space at the same time seeing something completely different.

Your home is your dogs den and safe refuge for the pack, his or her territory where they reign supreme no one outside of pack members or those who demonstrate the proper amount of respect and assume a subordinate position will be allowed to enter. Consider for a moment what it must really be like for dog to be taken from his or den and moved into the territory of other animals  and then have the remaining members of the pack  leave.  At this point your dog is totally confused because all that rules his or her survival has been taken away.

Pet Motels and Dog Condo's are designed and marketed to you, to be pleasing to your values. Your dog has no particular interested in a Minnie room with carpeting and a  sofa along with piped in sound. Sounds like five stars to you though. Just like pet foods are made and advertised to look appealing to us not our pets, do you really think your dog cares about his mighty dog being served on a shinny plate with a sterling fork, of course not but it looks good to you so you buy it because you feel your dog will love it because it appeals to you.

Essentially your dog is happiest in the security of his or her day to day den environment, this is the place where your dog can lay around totally relaxed because the environment is known to your dog to be a secure and safe place. When your away your dogs days go the same way they always go when your at work and dog is happy with that known environment.

This information is real based in real scientific research not clever marketing created to make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Your dog really is not stressed about being left at home, eating from his bowl in the same spot as always smelling the same familiar scents and hearing the same sounds he or she always hears. For your dog this is as good as it gets. So before you pack your dog off and turn his or her world around stop by the library and meet your dog on a whole new level, you will both benefit from the experience.

Find your self a pet sitter you and your dog like and let your dog stay where he or she really is most comfortable, in the safety and security of there own den waiting for the pack to return home.
